David Stine for Gioia’s Delis
We adore restaurant work. One of our favorite projects recently was crafting new tables, shelves, counter tops, and POS stations for the James Beard Foundation‘s America’s Classics Winner Gioia’s Delis.
Gioia’s is a legendary, 100-year old sandwich shop in St. Louis with three thriving locations. Known for their house-made hot salami and other classic American sandwiches, Gioia’s is a staple of the St. Louis food scene and is widely considered one of the greatest sandwich shops in the country. One look at the lines that form outside their doors confirms it.
After winning their James Beard Award, the young owners, Amanda and Alex Donley, wanted to update the restaurant’s tables and fixtures but without losing any of the classic charm of the original establishment.
Working together, Dave, Adam, and Amanda settled on maple butcher block, a beautiful, classic American style that — like Gioia’s itself — only gets better with age.
Dave installed new tables — two- and four-tops as well as communal tables — plus counters, shelves, and POS stations at each of their three locations. Here are some images of the work:
