David Stine - Woodworking
About David Stine Woodworking

David Stine selects every tree, mills every board and crafts each piece of furniture by hand. No two are alike.

Sustainability is truly the core of his work. David is the fourth generation to steward his family’s land, where he sustainably harvests all his own lumber.

David’s design inspiration comes from the forest itself, by how and where the tree grew. As he mills the boards and the inner beauty of the wood is revealed, he often sees what he will build. His designs maximize the raw, natural, and singular beauty of the wood -- graining, knots, live edges, and all.

Each piece is hand crafted using traditional methods of joinery and construction, with details clients can see and feel. Only environmentally safe finishes are used.

David’s work is offered to the trade, select retail establishments, and the general public.

St. Louis Magazine named David one of the region’s top 10 green entrepreneurs. His work has been featured in Forbes Life, The Chicago Tribune, Hamptons Television, The Robb Report’s Collection, designspace, Architectural DC, Fine Woodworking, Cottages & Bungalows, and i4design. His clients include actor and activist Michael J. Fox, architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen, political writer Andrew Sullivan, actor and director Chris Eigeman, broadcast journalist Forrest Sawyer, celebrity chef and author Ina Garten, and Mary and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

About David Stine

David Stine was born and raised on a dairy farm in southern Illinois, where he learned the art of woodworking from his father and grandfather.

He is a graduate of Penn State University and holds a law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. In 1995, while a law student, he founded Stine Woodworking as a creative outlet. After graduation, he practiced law for just one year before devoting himself full time to the art of crafting custom furniture.

In 2002, David moved back to his hometown in rural Illinois. He lives on a 40-acre farm near his family’s forests, the source of his lumber, where he renovated an 1871 farmhouse and built a woodshop, studio, kiln, and sawmill. Clients often travel to the farm and shop to meet privately with David, choose their boards, consult on design, enjoy a hearty meal, and a day in the country.
